Cosey Fanni Tutti and Chris Carter talk about COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle and their more recent work. Cosey, originally from Hull, describes life in the early 1970's at COUM Transmissions HQ and home at number 8 Prince Street in the Old Town.
If you want to take the Diamond Life sound walk, start at Queen Victoria Square and follow the map, which includes Cosey’s description of the house and activity that took place in and around it. Follow the orange signs.
COUM Transmissions was started in Hull by Genesis P-Orridge, along with main collaborator Cosey Fanni Tutti. Coum formed as a loose collective of people who developed performance art projects and street based actions. It was to be a founding moment of Hull’s connection with live and performance art.
Cosey’s recent book 'Art, Sex, Music' details these actions, leading to the formation of Throbbing Gristle in October 1976. Throbbing Gristle performed internationally between 1976 and 1981. A reunion took place between 2004 and 2010, with more tours and record releases. Following the death of Peter ’Sleazy' Christopherson in 2010 the band permanently split. Chris & Cosey continue to perform and record new work.
