HOW TO

Cassettes:

Reveal Hull turns your device into a virtual cassette player.
Go to the Cassettes to select the tape you wish to play.
Then you can tap on the CHANGE TAPE button to select another tape.

Diamond Life:

This is the main cassette, dipping in and out of 60 years of Hull’s music scene. It is designed to be experienced whist walking a route around the Old Town of Hull (see the route map on the Diamond Life cassette), but can be listened to anywhere. The experience lasts about 60 minutes and starts at Queen Victoria Square.

Signage:

Along the main Old Town walk, you will find bright orange signs. These signs give access to the Augmented Reality Trail. Collect all 10 of the AR surprises. This is designed for families and curious adults. See below for compatibility and best case use scenarios.

Map:

Using the Open Street Map is simple, but you must have LOCATION SERVICES turned on your device. This can be found in your settings on your phone. You can zoom in on the map. Tap on the pin icon on the top left of the map to locate yourself with a blue dot, and follow the route

Safety:

Always be careful in public places when listening to audio on headphones or earbuds. Pay particular attention to roads and pathways used by others.

Web application:

Reveal Hull is a web application or ‘web app’. This means everything runs in your web browser on your device and there is no ‘app’ to download. There are suggested requirements for Android phones with multiple cameras accessing augmented reality (AR), we strongly recommend the use of the Firefox browser to view the AR if you have an Android phone. Audio:

The main audio elements work across most devices including iOS, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux. The files are stereo, best listened to over headphones or earbuds. Please pay attention to safety when using mobile equipment in busy spaces.

Data:

Reveal Hull uses data from your mobile plan or wi-fi. If you are in Queen Victoria Square or in Central Hull you can use 20 minutes of free wifi from KCOM. Sign up here www.kcom.com/home/public-wi-fi You can preload the Diamond Life cassette and walk from the START sign in Queen Victoria Square. Free wifi is also available in Princes Quay Shopping Centre

Battery:

Charge your mobile device battery before venturing out. We suggest the battery is at 90% for a successful experience, depending on your device.

Augmented Reality Trail:

The augmented reality trail has 10 things to find. The first is the Key to Hull located at sign number 1. You can walk and find the icons or play a cassette at the same time. Android users are recommended to use the Firefox browser for a successful experience. Some Android devices with multiple cameras default to zoom camera settings in Chrome and Samsung Internet Browser. This is not optimal for reading AR markers.

The AR markers are located at the bottom of each sign. First you need to scan the QR code and then allow camera access. After this you hold the camera over the AR marker to reveal the item.

Known issues:

To view the Augmented Reality at each of the Reveal Hull orange signs, Android devices with multiple cameras work best with the Firefox browser and webXR. Other Android browsers may experience performance problems, notably selecting the wrong camera. This is because Android phones with multiple cameras may have a default zoom setting.
